will start to give states like ohio coverage. now to the aftermath of the superstorm sandy. and the newly canceled new york city marathon. dozens of generators, warm blankets, and food were reportedly left sitting there in central park, helping no one. this is happening when storm victims were reportedly freezing and going hungry. trace gallagher has an update. reporter: part of bloomberg's reason to go through with the new york city marathon, people complained that it would divert resources from those who desperately need them. when the race was canceled, the supplies -- they just sat there. they are still sitting there. not just the badly needed generators, but tens of thousands of mylar space wickens, jackets, bottled water that is desperately needed in a lot of areas. security crew say the reason the supplies cannot be moved is because there was an impromptu race that they could not push the runners out of the way there. the race organizers have not officially said why the supplies have not moved. we e-mail the mayor's office and no response on that. but the city did say that some of

york and new jersey. in the aftermath of hurricane sandy drivers that can actually find an open gas station have to deal with lines that stretch for miles and miles and sometimes, when they finally get to that gas station, they run out of gas. so you've got folks sitting in those lines and you've got gas in the storage tanks and in the pipelines and in the tankers across the northeast but in many cases the company can not, for power reasons, get that gasoline distributed to the places where it needs to go. 60% of the gas stations in new jersey are closed. i also heard numbers as high as 80%. 70% of the stations in long island are closed. think about that. that's a huge percentage of the gas stations in both of these highly populated states that are not even open for business. so it is a really, really tough situation out there. for those lucky enough to get to the pump, actually paying for their gas is another concern. >> i just spent $30,000 getting my home repaired and it is all gone. >> we have nothing. no credit cards. nothing in our bank accounts. $15 in my pocket. nowhere to g

evening. breaking news tonight in new york, where after days without power from hurricane sandy, the lights are beginning to slowly go back on in lower manhattan and beyond. it is slow, but it is happening. mayor michael bloomberg says most of the power in manhattan should return by midnight tonight, although some people will be left without it for another week. sandy is gone, but misery continues as so many devastated. today the death toll climbed to 97 people. staten island neighborhoods swept away. homeland security secretary janet napolitano toured the area, vowing to do everything she could to help. plus, after insisting this sunday's new york city marathon would go on, mayor bloomberg canceled the race. many were outraged the city would take valuable efforts away from the recovery efforts for the marathon. tonight, city hall and race officials have called it off. meanwhile, look at this. cars lined up for miles to get gas. drivers in some cases waiting 20 hours as the supply dwindles, fighting with each other. there's one report that a guy pu pulled a gun at one gas statio
